The slowdown of the economy begins to be felt on the demography of companies. According to a Banque de France bulletin published on Tuesday, December 12, the number of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) failures continues to decline year-on-year, albeit at a much slower pace than last year. Thus, SME bankruptcies fell by 1.1% between December 2017 and December 2018 while they decreased by 6% there is still one year according to a statement from the banking institution.

This change in pace reflects the effects of the slowdown in the French economy for several quarters. After experiencing an exceptional growth of 2.3% in 2017, the tricolor activity has stalled at 1.5% in 2018. And this fall should continue this year. According to the latest European Commission forecast released on 8 February, gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to grow by 1.3% in 2019.

Medium and very small businesses suffering

Across all SMEs, the different groups experienced mixed developments. Microenterprise (-1.3%) and small business bankruptcies declined between December 2017 and December 2018, while those of medium-sized enterprises (11.5%) and very small businesses (2.5%) jumped. On the side of mid-sized companies (ETI) and large companies (GE), the failures have fallen significantly (-19.6%) over one year thus confirming their financial health on average.

Transport to the trouble

The year 2018 was marked by a sharp rise in defaults (11.3%) in the transport and warehousing sector according to data from the central bank. Then came advice and services to businesses (6.4%) and financial activities and insurance (2.6%). In contrast, failures in agriculture
