Associations and agribusiness giants go to war against food waste. According to Le Parisien, a white paper entitled "The expiry dates an outdated idea?" is published this Monday, February 11th at the initiative of the application Too good to go and the ecological association France nature environment (FNE). A symbolic date since this Monday marks the third anniversary of the anti-food waste law that requires supermarkets to give their unsold. Among the flagship measures of this report, the addition of "and also after" after the famous mention "to consume preferably before" on the least sensitive foods.

The goal? Signify that this registration is only optional and indicative to inform about the date of minimum durability of the product. An indication of the quality of the product that could be devalued after that date in terms of taste or color, but without posing a health risk. It is the distinction with the words "to consume until" which is a "mandatory limit" applying to foods that are "likely, after a short period, to present an immediate danger to human health" such as sausages , meat or cooked dishes. This is therefore a health indicator.

"And also after" would allow consumers to see more clearly since Le Parisien reports that 53% of them do not understand this mention. A quarter of consumers say they never consume their products once the date has passed. Lucie Basch, a former agricultural engineer who left an agribusiness giant to found the Too Good To Go anti-saliva app, assures the newspaper that "adding an extra day of life to the products would reduce food waste. 170,000 kg per year! " Avoid 80,000 tons of waste for large retailers.
